Thousands of poor immigrants settled in Manhattan’s gritty lower east side around the turn of the 20th century, carving out lives for themselves by doing anything to make a living.

Above, Sara Roosevelt park cuts through a large part of the neighborhood, intersecting Broome Street that was home to several tenements buildings of the time.
